Dancing Sisters Box

Kleenex Box

Washing Machine Box
These are little (4"x4") paintings. Little. Small is actually harder for me than larger. The content has to be definite or it is just a bunch of mush. I made these to celebrate the year anniversary of the BOXX gallery, a very wonderful place.

Maybe it's time...

Maybe it's time to write again... we have lived here 2 1/2 years now. I have a house and a studio and am co-mother to a flock of chickens and 2 chihuahuas. I love this beautiful agricultural valley.
I am making art in earnest now.
I have many questions about life.

My apron

There are some things you cannot let go of...

I met K and L when they were 19 and almost 23 and I was 43 or 44. We were all taking the same art classes, printmaking, drawing and painting. At the time I didn't know that the creative process dissolves boundary lines between people. I had somehow become friends, real friends with two women half my age. So of course I questioned it, and was set straight by K. I have learned so much from my friendship with these two...some things practical, some motivational, and everything about friendship can transend generations.

How lucky I was to meet these two. I am sorry that over the years L has a paint mustache, but you can see how I have used and loved this gift. They sent me this almost 20 years ago...
Yesterday I hung it back on the hook in my new studio.
I love you both.

Self portraits 2014, collage, ink, paint on brown found paper

I don't like the number five, and here are 5 self portraits I found while labeling my photos.

My homely, chubby child self full of ideas.

I'm unpacking paints and brushes. It looks like a studio here. I am itching to start.

I think writers are braver than artists... it's a little hard to post my childhood self.

I moved... from a big house and a separate 400 square foot studio. I had lots of room. I kept everything. EVERYTHING. It was easier to keep things than to deal with the emotions that arose when I tried to let go of them. Mostly guilt... guilt that someone gave me that and how could i give away anything that G. gave me? Guilt...how could I throw away letters that my sister took so much time and caring energy to write? Uneasy guilt...well I bought that and even if I no longer like it I should keep it, and worst of all ART... my flat files are full and my walls are overflowing.

And then we moved.

I have a choice. I could live surrounded by boxes and piles and a storage place to pay rent on or I could get rid of about half of what I own.

In Marie Kondo's book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, she asks the reader to envision what kind of life they would like to lead, what their ideal environment would be, how that environment would make them feel.

The disparity between my MASS OF STUFF and a small house that is spacious, clean, a welcoming place to have tea with friends, a haven is at the moment still large. But... it's getting better!

Yesterday I went through my clothes which wasn't too hard since I buy most of them at the thrift store anyway. They are neat and orderly and well... happy. And I feel happy looking at them. I found my favorite work pants...

today my goal is the pile of boxes in the corner of my studio and putting away the shop vac (sounds small I know, but it's been in the house for weeks... how these odd things stop us???

There is something powerful about downsizing and getting rid of what you don't need. It frees you up to be in the here and now and move forward.

I am back from the land of ice and snow...

I am standing on a bridge overlooking the Gihon river in Johnson, Vermont. I was here for 27 days for an amazing artist residency at Vermont Studio Center. When I got here you could not see the water in the river, just snow. As the month progressed and the temp got a little warmer the snow melted over the water, and the ice began to break up. There was ice floating on the river and lying at the bottom of the river. I had to watch each day no matter how cold it was.
Conclusion? Snow and ice are incredibly beautiful but hard to live with for months on end.

Tonight I sat in the hot tub with G. and had a talk about what I learned at this residency.
Since I had not made art for 9 months the first few days I felt almost apathetic, like I couldn''t remember why I wanted to do this art thing. Slowly this was replaced by my usual experimentation and faith that just working would yield, well... something.
Things got better. (and I started meeting stupendous people)

I had three opportunities to have a visiting artist come to my studio to look at what I was making, offer suggestions, and for me to ask questions. I knew I had questions, but I didn't know what they were.
I could not think of what to ask the first visiting artist, but I got the feedback that my painting was different (in a good way), and that I was doing well and should just keep going.
I asked the second artist why we should make art? I was sincere about this question. Her answer was that people need beautiful things to look at. This is so true, but it still didn't answer my question.
By the time the third artist came around I knew what I wanted to know... my question was: what did I miss by not getting a BFA and MFA? I think she had good answers... She said that two years of uninterrupted studio work, feedback from other artists, and developing the ability to brush off the opinions of those who do not like what you make is helpful. She told me that when artists came to her studio that did not like her work she took them out to coffee and asked them about other resources that would further her career.

I know one of my unanswered questions is where do I belong in the art world?
If there is art and art business at what point do I cross over to the business side?
and again why am I making art?

Meanwhile.... I had a lot of fun, ate yummy food, got to see my sister and niece and brother in law and my old friend Sho and painted on the walls of the studio! I made the above painting in the last few days before we left. It made me happy.
A good reason to make art, happiness...

I hope you can read this...

I do hope you can read this, the type is kind of small and I am not used to making cartoons. I am getting ready to leave for Vermont Studio Center for a month long residency and I am trying to "finish" putting my house together.
For the first time in 26 years all my "stuff" is in one place. I can't blame Ginger for my accumulations. I have box after box after box of items to go through and let go of. I don't let go easily. I understand the hoarder mentality of equating keeping things so you think you don't lose the people who gave/left them  to you. Just going through my art supplies is daunting. Why do I need so many sketchbooks?
I need to work and I can't til this all gets put away and everything has a place.
Almost done, and when I get home I will give my tables a coat of paint and go to work!
But having so much "stuff" has got to change for me, it takes up too much energy.

Daybreak

This morning I was awake at 6am. I seldom see the sun rise so I put on my jacket and crossed the bridge into the field...
Not a soul was about so I guess it didn't matter if I had my pajamas on. The moon was still out and flocks of birds shook the trees when I startled them.
Then I wandered home, made Ginger a valentine and baked some muffins for our Valentine breakfast.
This is unusual behavior for me. I don't like to get up in the morning and sometimes I fight dark thoughts. I usually have to start a mental gratitude list to boost me out of bed.
I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's day. For me it's about appreciating all my friends and family, and my sweetest Ginger.
love to you all, Janice

Life with Lillie

It's 11pm and Lillie has dragged my fuzzy slipper, a stuffed animal and some of her toys all over the house. Every night about this time it's like a switch goes off in her head, "time to play".
After all Ms. Lil is only between one and two years old and she has a lot of energy.
Friends had a few questions about Lillie, when did we get her, and what was her story?
Both she and Chica are from Yakima Valley Pet Rescue. Lillie was found on the streets of Yakima with a broken leg. The vet for the pet rescue advised removing her leg, but her new foster moms said no. They took her to their vet who saved her leg and now my little girl runs on all four like the wind!

I can't talk about Lillie or Chica without talking about Pepper Fewel and her wonderful family. They not only foster dogs, but have 30 horses, all rescues. I think the video below might explain a little of what they do.  Chica and Lillie each spent 6 months with Pepper and her daughter Tiffany, and grew to love them, but such little dogs aren't safe with cars coming and going and all the horses.

We go visit now and then, and Pepper promises me a meeting with the horses some day. I've never been around horses and have such a curiosity to see what they are like.
These people see the goodness in all animals from the big horses to a little 4 pound girl like Lillie. How lucky we are to get to know the family at  Cherry Wood B and B
If you go to their website look at the page where they talk about horse rescue. It will move you.

It's beautiful country about an hour from our home in Tieton.
Pepper and Tiffany touch my heart, and they gifted the two of us with the sweetest, most loving dogs.

Catching up

It was hard to leave my little house full of "stuff" and travel to Eugene. I'm glad we did. Upon return I'm more optimistic about unpacking the endless boxes and setting up my studio.
The printmaking workshop I attended was wonderful, so well organized. I learned a lot of cool things.

On the way home we stayed at the coast and went to my favorite thrift spot, the Waldport Flea Market. I'm trying to be really picky about adding to my "stuff", and this time all I brought home were photos. I love to take photos. It was the nose that got me. The grungy old doll with a lot to tell.

And how are you doing with your overwhelmingly hoardish amount of possessions?

Answer:
Weeelll... i think i have to look at why i have so much "stuff". Paper, paintings, treasures, old pool balls, toys... first let me say that some things i just NEED as a marker that explains who i am. Like the painting in the photo, best self portrait I ever did. I love her messy and strange self. I was a messy and strange kid...did I know she was me when I painted her? no, but I do now...and every time I look at her face I am happy and I claim myself. (and no, I don't think I am a vampire)

(that beautiful card was made by my friend connie)

But... there are the 8 large boxes full of my childhood dolls and old letters and photo albums... i can't get rid of them, why? because i will forget my past? Probably not because my past just shows up in my paintings without any looking at all this old stuff. No prompts needed. My sister is very good at letting go of "stuff", me not so much.

I am sifting through the rest of my studio boxes, trying to let go so I can have the spare and light studio I desire. But... I was really glad to see my old pool balls surface.

Any advice about letting go of stuff?

Love to you all.... Janice

hi alice... you have inspired me to try blogging again...

i stopped because life was going faster than i could assimilate it. everything i wrote sounded a bit false and too cheery, that sort of desperation cheery. why write unless it provides something to chew on, some way to figure out where you are in the great scheme of things...

this photo is the full moon at the start of winter taken from the front porch of g's house. we actually have two houses now (more on that soon), the duplex dream has come true.

There really does seem to be a lot to tell so I'll say a bit each night. I like interview format so here goes:

1. Do you miss Eugene? yes and no... I miss Aggie, not being in the same city is hard. I don't miss the traffic and the noise. I love the space and the peace here. I miss the library and Trader Joe's. I miss good health food stores and restaurants that serve healthy food. I miss my art friends. But Eugene?, no not really.

2. What is your new house like? Well, it is a house/studio that we bought in September. We were so lucky to buy the house next door so it really is like living in a duplex. I love my little home. Built in 1946 it is/was solid, needing only cosmetics to spruce it up. We put in new heat and windows and it's warm and cozy. BUT it isn't done yet and i'm not working yet. This is very hard. We had a bathroom linoleum installation fiasco and so no shower, floor or toilet for another 3 weeks. I sneak out in the backyard at night to pee. (It's very dark, no one can see). I am going to pretend that I'm living at WomanShare where we didn't have indoor bathrooms.

ok, i am very sleepy. tomorrow g is going to watch the football game and i'm doing what i have been doing for a few months now, work on my house. I love Tieton, but trust me nothing is perfect.

An evening walk...

We walked downtown (about 3 blocks) tonight at 8pm to get our mail. It is dark out by 8  so we hung a little light on Chica so we could see her! Chica is not very good on a leash and we are terrible dog trainers so we let her off the leash tonight. She mostly stays near and we were the only souls out on the sidewalk. You cannot see a black dog at night... it was like walking a little firefly.
I had a terrible headache today and didn't get much done. After dinner friends stopped by and brought me some cookies which did cure me.
I say it a lot... it's magic here.
but friends, please move here I miss you.

How are we doing?

Pretty well... Ms. Chica is sleek and healthy and weighs a whopping 8.2 pounds. She is learning how to handle noises without being so frightened.

This is our friend Sandra who has a huge and amazing garden. Tonight she brought us this "slice" of a 22 pound cantalope!!! (and it was yummy)

Ginger and I are tired, but we are getting to the end of our house renew/remodel. I'd say we are about 85% done. It's clean and cozy here. We need a heating system soon. In the last two days the cooler fall mornings and eves have arrived.

I hope you are all well and happy. Sending much love, Janice

Tieton Views

This is a view to the west of town. Agriculture industry location 3 blocks from downtown.

The little town of Tieton is full of modest houses. Mostly all very clean and neat.
Shelly Jo, me and Chica the little dog went for a walk tonight.... peaceful...

Art Life in Yakima

Yakima is about 15 miles from Tieton. When we first arrived I though "oh no, it's horrible and ugly and full of strip malls and box stores".  And that is true, parts of town look like West 11th in Eugene... but little by little we started finding the arts scene.

We attended this opening full of beautiful monoprints, the work of  Joan CawleyCrane. (She is pictured above).

Ginger, Sandra and I cannot remember this woman's name except she was so friendly and nice.

Unframed monoprints on paper and they looked really good on the wall.

I was wrong about Yakima... there is good art energy here, kind people supporting the arts and I think there is room for me.

Now if a studio would suddenly materialize...
